The Power of Words
Today, I wanted to talk to you about something that has been on my mind a lot lately: the power of words. It's amazing how something as simple as the words we use can have such a huge impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.
Have you ever heard the phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"? But the truth is, words can hurt.
As easily as words can lift us up, they can also tear us down. They can inspire us or demotivate us. They can also break our sense of self, make us rejected or unworthy.
When we use positive, encouraging words, we create an environment of love, support, and growth. When we use negative words, we create an environment of fear, anger, and isolation.
One of the things I am deeply grateful to my parents for is that they creating an environment of respectful communication both with each other and with us. Even though my brother and I were children, we were always addressed respectfully. Ofcourse words were also used to set boundaries and create healthy disciple, never once, do I remember them belittling us with words...but always building us up with them.
I didn't realize the value of that invisible gift and the incredible impact it has had on my life and how I communicate in all my personal as well as professional relationships.
Do you remember the environment you grew up in? What impact did the words and tones spoken to you OR around you, in your early formative years, have on your life?
( Feel free to share with my via email. Please mention if it is ok to share your experience with others.)
But It's not just about the words we say to others.
The words we say to ourselves are just as important. When we tell ourselves that we're not good enough, smart enough, or strong enough, we start to believe it.
So, what can we do to harness the power of words? One of the best things we can do is practice conscious communication. This means being aware of the words we use and the impact they have.
It means being intentional about using positive, uplifting words, both in our conversations with others and in our self-talk.
I believe that everyone has the power to change their life and influence the lives of others for the better through the words they use.
Together, we can learn to communicate with more empathy, understanding, and love.
I'll leave you with this quote by Maya Angelou,
"Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to you."
