Root Chakra: The Survival Program Running your Life
For as long as I can remember, fear has whispered to me in the language of lack—a lack of approval, a lack of time, a lack of ability, a lack of resources, a lack of a clear path forward. Always something missing. Always something just out of reach.
Fear, at its core, is the voice of the Root Chakra. Its sacred function is survival. It is the instinct that keeps us alert, that ensures we eat, shelter ourselves, and remain safe.
But in each of us, this instinct has gone rogue. Fear and insecurity no longer wait for actual danger—they fire at shadows, at possibilities, at nothing at all. And slowly, relentlessly, they're rewriting our inner weather. What should be an alarm reserved for emergencies has become the background noise of ordinary life.
It wasn’t until I began the journey of Kundalini Yoga that I truly recognized the magnitude of this force within me. I saw how fear had quietly taken the reins—how anxiety, stress, tension, and constant pressure had become the background hum of my waking life. I was always chasing safety. Always trying to arrive somewhere that would finally feel secure.
Spinning without awareness, I had allowed this current of fear to become the language of my egoic self. It propelled me to strive, to grasp, to prove, to accumulate—believing that if I could just secure enough, achieve enough, be enough, I would finally be safe.
But safety, I slowly discovered, was not something to chase. It was something to cultivate from within.
The Root Chakra operates through the primal mind—the most ancient layer of our consciousness.
It is constantly scanning for one thing: Am I safe, or am I in danger?
The Root Chakra operates in the same way within all of us. Most of us grew up surrounded by subtle or overt evidence of instability. Struggle. Emotional unpredictability. Financial stress. Lack of nurturing. Lack of consistent reassurance. On top of that, we carry ancestral imprints—patterns of survival encoded through generations and quietly transmitted through our DNA.
So the Root Chakra builds its case.
It collects evidence.
And for many people I work with, that evidence says: "Life is unpredictable. You are not fully in control. Stay alert. You can't relax. Keep running...if you stop, you die"
Sounds familiar?
Even if, as an adult, you’ve worked incredibly hard to build stability—career, home, relationships—your Root Chakra may still broadcast a background frequency of lack, vigilance, and subtle fear. Because it remembers. It remembers moments when you had no control over circumstances, over other people, over sudden events. And the primal mind does not easily forget.
Scientifically speaking, fear is not weakness—it’s programming. A survival algorithm your nervous system runs automatically to keep you alive.
Your brain constantly pulls from past experiences, scans the present for potential threat, and updates your body in real time—adjusting heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, digestion, even where your attention locks in. It doesn’t wait for your conscious approval. It acts first.
That’s why fear so often shows up physically.
- Tight shoulders.
- A clenched jaw.
- Neck tension that won’t release.
- Tension headaches.
- Digestive disruption.
- Elimination issues.
- Restlessness in the chest.
And all the while, you tell yourself, “I’m fine. I’m handling it.”
The body may be telling a different story.
The truth is, we cannot control the vast majority of life. We don’t control social climates, political currents, other people’s choices, or the unfolding of events that shape our days. Even on our most organized, disciplined day, our control might barely reach twenty percent.
So a deeper question begins to surface:
If safety can’t come from controlling life… When do we finally relax into existence? When do we soften into ourselves?
Through fifteen years of dedicated self-work, I’ve discovered something essential: the Root Chakra does not respond to logic. You can try reasoning with anxiety. You can try convincing panic that “everything is fine.” How well has that worked?
The Root Chakra responds to felt evidence.
If it has stacked years of evidence that says, “We are not safe,” then we must begin to stack new evidence—evidence of stability, choice, agency, grounded presence. Small, consistent experiences where you demonstrate to your nervous system: I can create steadiness. I can choose. I can ground.
This is how we retrain the primal mind.This is how we soften hypervigilance. This is how we gently counter the subconscious impulse that keeps you on edge—even when, objectively, you have everything you need to survive, yet the inner narrative still whispers, “We are not safe.”
